Greetings:

As endless headlines remind us daily of the conflicts that pit man against man and neighbor against neighbor, a book of striking images and thoughtful observations is about to be released that squarely challenges the idea of “culture war” that has engendered nearly a decade of global conflict.

This October, SelectBooks publishers will release Enough to Go Around: Searching for Hope in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Darfur. The work of renowned photojournalist and documentarian Chip Duncan, Enough to Go Around carefully peels back the bleak headlines to find hope in the face of international crisis.

In this exquisitely photographed and movingly written work, Duncan chronicles his travels through east Africa and south Asia alongside the selfless aid workers that tend to the largely unseen civilian casualties of conflict in some of the most desperate situations on the planet. In the process, Enough to Go Around introduces us to the displaced inhabitants of refugee camps in Darfur, homeless children and widowers following a devastating earthquake in Pakistan, and the strong survivors of a generation of warfare in Afghanistan. It shares the compelling stories of people defying victimhood and embracing the idea of a better future.

In Enough to Go Around Duncan uses both his documentarian eye and his charitable heart to move past the often oversimplified characterizations of the parties involved as villains or simply the “other” to show that “something more is possible, that we are more alike than dissimilar[.]” His stories and personal insights give depth to the characters he meets along the way. From an Ethiopian aid worker’s simple act of sharing to an Afghan cab driver’s new found freedom to listen to cassette tapes he was forced to hide under the rule of the Taliban, Duncan puts forth a powerful argument in favor not of our differences, but of our similarities.

As much art as it is an impassioned plea, Enough to Go Around challenges the industrialized world to live up to the responsibility that accompanies its position of privilege by reaching out in a spirit of compassion and collaboration rather than one of competition. Its compelling narrative, lush photography and foreword by philanthropist Jennifer Buffett are both engaging and enlightening reading for all ages.

Enough to Go Around will be available in bookstores in October 2009.
